Selah.

“Selah.” is a Hebrew word found in the Holy Bible, specifically within the Book of Psalms. The phrase is used to prompt the congregation to pause after a verse, to reflect and absorb the messages conveyed in the hymns. This piece diverges from my previous works by shifting focus from external inspiration to an internal, introspective meditation. The creation process for this work mirrors it’s sentiment as it was a deeply contemplative journey, allowing myself to become fully immersed with the work. Each intentional stroke was followed by a careful process of removal, adding and subtracting thoughts imitating the rhythm of contemplation. The result of which is an array of soft, fluid marks that evoke subtle movements comparable to the flow of a river. The colour palette for this piece is dominated by deep blues and greens to mirror that same likeness. This work is an invitation towards the viewer to pause and reflect as it encourages stillness and quiet observation. Providing a space for introspection, this piece aims to provide a moment of enlightenment. Also containing two gold beams framing the work, I wished to continue the connection between the tangible and intangible. Serving as a reminder of the importance of taking moments to pause and reflect amongst the chaos of everyday life.
